Program Eligibility

Any continuing Harvard College undergraduate student in good standing who is interested in participating as a Fellow in a PRIMO-designated research project directed by a Harvard Business School faculty member during the ten weeks of the program is eligible to apply.

Since a primary purpose of the Program is to build and foster a strong and diverse community of business scholars, a successful application will demonstrate the following:

  • A strong dedication to developing or furthering academic interest and excellence in business research;
  • The ability and desire to participate successfully and enthusiastically in a diverse residential community of scholars;
  • An academic record demonstrating success in coursework that develops theoretical knowledge and/or practical application of academic principles in research;
  • A commitment to participate and contribute for the full ten weeks of the Program. Please note that program dates are not flexible. Individuals taking summer school courses, preparing for summer graduate school entrance exam, or engaging in full-time public service projects are not eligible to participate in PRIMO.

Evaluation of the applicant will be based on how well and how effectively the components of the application define and address these qualities and requirements.

How to Apply

Applications will be submitted through Harvard's CARAT system.  Applicants are required to submit their current transcript, an academic recommendation letter, and a resume, as well as the waiver form and three short essays.

To complete your application, please do the following:
  • Review the PRIMO project descriptions:  You will be asked to select your top three choices of projects in your application.
  • Solicit a recommender: One academic letter of recommendation is required.  Recommendation letters are submitted through the CARAT system, so be sure to enter this information in as soon as possible. Please review the instructions on adding recommenders to CARAT and provide your recommender with instructions for submitting reference letters. Applicants do NOT need to seek a residential letter of recommendation. House recommendations will be solicited directly from URAF for all Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village (PRISE, BLISS, PRIMO, SHARP, and SURGH) applicants. If you have a community-based reference who is not in your House community (e.g., coach), please contact your House Fellowship Advisor (HFA) so that they can be in touch with that individual to get feedback for your application.
  • Prepare and submit your materials: Submit the PRIMO supplemental form (CARAT Upload A), essay responses (CARAT Upload B), resume (CARAT Upload C), current transcript (CARAT Upload D), and the recommendation waiver form (CARAT Upload E) through the CARAT system.  All files should be saved as pdf files.
