Admissions

Costs & Financial Support

All incoming students, regardless of need and background, are awarded a fellowship which includes tuition, single-person health fees, and a living stipend ($35,400 in 2009-2010).

Although there is no formal commitment, it is expected that a similar level of financial aid will be awarded for up to four years. A fifth year of funding is possible for students who work as a Doctoral Associate in Research and Teaching. All financial aid awards are contingent upon a student's satisfactory academic progress.

Doctoral Associates in Research and Teaching
Training students for a career in research and teaching is a critical component of a distinguished doctoral education. Typically, during their third or fourth year, doctoral students work part-time as a Doctoral Associate in Research and Teaching (DART) with an HBS faculty member. Our office helps match doctoral students with faculty and the work of the School. Research and teaching positions with non-HBS faculty may be approved on a case-by-case basis. Through this program, students have worked as course assistants for required MBA courses, while others have coauthored articles with faculty as a result of their collaborative research efforts. Students are compensated for their participation in the DART Program. Those who work as a DART become eligible for a fifth year of financial support.

Research Support
Students usually prepare their thesis prospectus in their third or fourth year. At that time, they may request from the Doctoral Programs financial support for their research.
