Chandler said to me one time, “You know, everything’s there in those Hidy books.” He was speaking of Standard Oil, in particular.

He said, “They just never put it together. They just never sort of got it that it was the organizational stuff that was just as important as, you know, some new discovery in the Middle East, or whatever.” And he said, “They never really told that story.”

Al thought sociologically. And so he’s the foundation stone, in two different ways. Both in the intellectual structure that he gave all of us, and also in the respect within the School that he commanded before he ever arrived.
