"Objectives": reading between the lines
In his 1986 report to President Derek Bok, Dean John H. McArthur listed a number of "objectives for the first year of the MBA Program." Some are predictable, for instance, to provide students with "a thorough grounding in the basic functional areas of business management," and to "develop an understanding of the internal and external environment in which business organizations and their managements operate."
Others, though, speak to how the School seeks to "develop"—that is, transform—its students. For example:
- To develop an appreciation of and excitement over the range of responsibilities of a manager
- To develop a willingness to seek out, embrace, and manage change in a responsible manner
- To develop perseverance, patience, and quiet confidence in the face of ambiguity, anxiety, and pressures sometimes experienced in corporate life
- To develop integrity and high standards
- To provide insights as to self and career opportunities, typically in the private sector, in the hopes of improving the fit and long-run effectiveness and satisfaction of the individual
