A pioneer: Jim McKenney
In 1959, a freshly minted graduate of UCLA's doctoral program in business administration, James McKenney, arrived on the HBS campus. McKenney also held degrees in mechanical and industrial engineering from Purdue, and was deeply interested in both computers and production-related problems.
When he came to HBS, he brought with him the rough framework of a computer-based business simulation. Working with Stanley Buchin (a 1956 graduate of the MBA program, then working on his DBA degree and also deeply interested in computer simulations), McKenney created the prototype for the "Business Game" that has been taught at HBS ever since.
