A constrained pipeline
Although the DCS degree was authorized in 1922, it was not until 1928 that Charles I. Gragg became its first recipient, and not until 1933 that Stanley F. Teele—a future dean of the School—became the second.
Why such a minimal output? During a faculty discussion of the subject, Professors Copeland and Sprague, in particular, emphasized the "problems of young men on the staff who were required to devote all their time to work for the School when they should be devoting half their time to study for the doctor's degree."
