And what most other schools that I know has given in and become like any other graduate school, discipline oriented.  Where you see this particularly is in the research it brings.

My own bias is that the law school and the Business School, they're one of the last places where teaching is important and you'll take time with it in the whole west. Oxford and Cambridge still a little bit, but the tremendous emphasis on discipline, which means the only way you move up the ladder is to write.  You spend your time writing, you have to sacrifice teaching.  It's okay at a place like MIT because there you're going out to a specialty—You'll be a chemical engineer, which is fine.  It's got enough of a discipline, you know chemistry but you also know engineering.

But here, and I think it's a real problem.  And it would be very interesting to trace that.  Why did you get [that standard]—why only quantitative skill?
